First year

Every year after

Typical ranges, not a quote. Design prices vary a lot by country and by person. Payment fees for online sales are not included.

Where the ranges come from

Domain: common endings such as .com usually cost between $10 and $20 a year. Some endings cost far more, and some are cheap only in the first year.

Hosting: WordPress hosting for a small site typically costs a few dollars a month, less when paid for a longer term. Website builder subscriptions usually cost more per month because the editor is part of the price. Care plans from agencies add updates and small changes for a monthly fee.

Design and building: doing it yourself with a template costs mainly your time. A freelancer typically charges from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, an agency more, depending on how much is custom.

Email at your domain: mailbox services usually charge a few dollars per person per month.

Your time: even when someone else builds the site, you write the texts, choose the photos and review the pages. After launch, keeping hours, prices and photos current takes a few hours a year.

Starter is one WordPress website for $2.09 a month on a 36-month term, billed $75.24 upfront, which is about $25 a year. Shorter terms cost more per month and plans never renew on their own. With Starter for 36 months, or Pro Business and Cloud for 24 or 36 months, a standard domain is free for the first year, then renews at the normal price.

SSL, nightly backups and the setup wizard are included: you pick a design, answer a few questions and the first draft of your pages is written from your answers. Email at your domain and online payments are not included. New plans come with a 15-day money-back guarantee. See all plans.

Questions

How accurate is this calculator?

It gives typical ranges, not a quote. Prices for design work vary a lot between countries and people. Use it to see which costs exist and roughly how big each one is, then ask for real quotes.

Why is the first year more expensive?

The design and building work is paid once. After that you pay only the yearly costs: the domain, hosting, email and any paid plugins, plus the time to keep the site current.

What costs do people forget?

Email at your own domain, paid plugins or themes with yearly licences, renewal prices that are higher than the first year, and the time it takes to write the pages and keep them current.

Is my own time really a cost?

Yes, if those hours would otherwise earn you money. Enter what an hour of your time is worth to see it in the total, or leave it at zero to see only what you pay out.
